Reading books to treat depression

Patients with mental health problems could be prescribed self-help books, as part of their treatment under a new scheme.

GPs will be able to refer patients with mental health problems to their local libraries to choose from a selection of approved self-help books.

The programme, launched by The Reading Agency charity and endorsed by the Department of Health, will be rolled out across England in May.

Dr James Kingsland, a GP from Merseyside, told BBC News he supports the scheme.

Debbie Hicks from The Reading Agency said books can improve a patients mental health and well-being.
